New Prime Minister to lead Sudan’s Transitional government

Sudan’s new prime minister, Abdalla Hamdok, who was sworn in on Wednesday will lead the transitional government according to the statement by the state news agency SUNA. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the presidential palace in Khartoum, said. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was also sworn in to head the 11-member Sovereign Council, which replaces the defunct Transitional Military Council.

 Addressing a a news conference in the capital Khartoum, the new Prime Minister and head of the government Abdalla Hamdok said that achieving peace and solving the country’s economic crisis will be the top priority of the transitional government.“The revolution’s deep-rooted slogan, ‘freedom, peace, and justice,’ will form the program of the transitional period,” he reiterated. The United States, Britain, and Norway welcomed Hamdok’s appointment and urged the military to “engage constructively” with the new government.

 The Transitional Council will have the tough tasks of rebuilding an economy battered by years of US sanctions and government mismanagement during the 30-year rule of thr former President Bashir. Several military officials like General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo were also sworn in.
