Nuno Quelhas has become the chair of the Vodacom Mozambique board of
directors. He succeeded Salimo Abdula, who headed the organization
for the last three years or so. Quelhas has a challenging task ahead
to chase the ambitious target set by his predecessor. There is a
public commotion, which has resulted in resentment against high fees
charged by the telecom operator.
Quelhas will be in the saddle for the next three years since the
company follows a rotation system for the board chairman. He has
extensive experience in the company. Prior to being elected to head
the company, he was a member of the company’s board of directors,
giving him extensive knowledge of the enterprise.
Quelhas wants to continue the projects initiated by his predecessors,
which have positioned Vodacom as an innovative institution and the
number one in the communication services sector in Mozambique. He
will be working towards consolidating Vodacom’s position as an active
communication company, proactive to the changes that would happen in
the communications space .
Vodacom has a unique position as a socially responsive company, while
at the same time solidly grooved as a technology leader. It may be
recalled that Salimo Abdula initiated several technological changes
aimed at sustaining Vodacom’s position as the country’s main
communication operator. It has invested in social sectors like
education, health, particularly containing malaria, supply of good
quality seeds to farmers etc.
