- According to the Mbeya Region Commissioner Mr Juma Homera, the Tanzanian government intends to continue its cooperation with the Dutch government to boost potato production in the country.
Tanzania and the Netherlands have an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at promoting the potato sector. Under the MOU, both countries have worked jointly for the registration of quality seed potatoes. According to the Mbeya Region Commissioner Mr Juma Homera, the Tanzanian government intends to continue its cooperation with the Dutch government to boost potato production in the country.
The embassy of the Netherlands in Tanzania in partnership with the Wageningen University and Research, recently organised a conference to discuss the current state of the potato sector and strategies to increase the production of the crop. The conference brought together various agricultural experts, seed production experts, farmers, policymakers, members of the business community and other government leaders
Dutch Ambassador in Tanzania Wiebe de Boer said that the Netherlands was committed to empowering Tanzanian potato farmers and turn their production into commercial undertakings. With the vast land conducive for potato cultivation, the country he said can become a future potato hub within the region. He added that the Netherlands was willing to share its knowledge and expertise with Tanzanian farmers to optimize potato production.

The Netherlands has supported Tanzania Official Seed Certification (TOSCI) to develop the first potato variety catalogue that was launched recently. The catalogue provides insights, knowledge and practical guidance to the farmers and has listed 16 potato seed varieties.
