Ghana’s incumbent president Nana Addo Akufo-Addo has been re-elected. This was announced by the Ghana’s election commission. Akufo Ado has polled 51.59 percent as against main opposition candidate John Mahama’s 47.36 percent of votes. www.trendsnafrica.com in a story run a few days ago has quoted analysts about the small edge the incumbent had against  his main opponent.

Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party, obtained 6,730,413 votes, being 51.595% of the total valid votes cast.  Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the electoral commission announced the results to a packed audience of representatives of political parties and journalists.

Importantly, both the parties had come to an understanding a  week ago before the  election last week that any dispute arising from election will be fought through legal channels. Both have called on their followers to desist from any violence or any other act that precipitates tension.

Despite that assurance,  the police said five people had been killed from electoral violence since the election on Monday and 60 incidents that indicate tensions between the rival groups, including exchange of gunshots where five people died.

Ahead of the election, both groups claimed that they had the upper hand in the contest. The opposition party leader John Mahama even warned President Nana Akufo-Addo against any attempt to steal this week’s election through unfair means including rigging elections. The observers who were camping Ghana however maintained that the elections were largely free and fair. Ghana is one among the very few countries known for her political stability.
