ReconAfrica, a Canadian-based company has been undertaking oil exploration activities in the Kavango regions. The company recently came under criticism from locals who alleged that they were not consulted before the company started its operations. International environmentalists also accused the company of a lack of transparency about the environmental impact of its operations in the area. Activists and international environmentalists urged the government to keep oil drilling and fracking out of the Kavango. A lawsuit was filed on 25 October on behalf of individuals and entities who bought shares in the company between 28 February 2019 and 7 September 2021suing the company for running a “fraudulent scheme” that deceived the public over its oil drilling operations.

However, ReconAfrica’s controversial oil drilling was officially endorsed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources of Namibia.

Addressing the parliament this week, the chairman of the committee and former Cabinet minister Tjekero Tweya said that the committee recommended the continuation of the exploration project to complete the exploration phase.Tweya said more than 40 regulatory and stakeholders’ engagement activities have been conducted by ReconAfrica and environmental consultants together with the ministry of mines.
