Namibia has reached a historic milestone by electing Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah in the 2024 presidential and National Assembly elections. A seasoned stateswoman, Nandi-Ndaitwah secured 57.31% of the vote, becoming the fifth president of Namibia since its independence in 1990. Her election represents not only a victory for SWAPO but also a landmark moment for gender equality in Namibian politics.
The ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, to which Nandi-Ndaitwah belongs, retained its dominance despite increasing competition from opposition parties. The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) announced the results on Tuesday evening after an extended voting process. Initially scheduled to conclude on 27 November, voting was prolonged in certain areas to accommodate disruptions on the first day.
The election saw significant public engagement, with nearly 1.45 million registered voters participating. Nandi-Ndaitwah’s closest rival, Panduleni Itula of the Independent Patriots for Change, garnered 25.50% of the vote. This decisive victory underlines SWAPO’s enduring influence in Namibian politics, even as the party secured 51 seats in the National Assembly, a notable decline from previous years. In her acceptance speech, Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed gratitude to the nation, emphasising her commitment to peace, stability, and economic transformation. She highlighted the importance of unity, diversity, and youth empowerment in achieving sustainable development. Her tone was resolute yet inclusive, acknowledging the pivotal role of Namibians in safeguarding the country’s democratic processes.
The elections, though broadly peaceful, were not without challenges. The extension of the voting period reflected the ECN’s determination to ensure all eligible citizens had the opportunity to participate. This commitment was evident in the large voter turnout and the meticulous reporting of results.
