Namibia has officially launched construction on its most significant solar energy initiative to date—the 100-megawatt Sores Gaib Photovoltaic Power Station. Positioned 33 kilometers northwest of Rosh Pinah in the southern Kharas Region, this groundbreaking project marks a pivotal milestone in Namibia’s quest for energy security and sustainable development.
The solar plant, set to become the largest in the nation upon completion, is being developed through a partnership between China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Chint New Energy Development Co., Ltd., showcasing growing international collaboration in Africa’s renewable energy sector.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, NamPower Managing Director Kahenge Haulofu highlighted the project’s strategic importance in reducing reliance on imported electricity and fossil fuels. The plant is expected to feed substantial clean energy into the national grid, supporting Namibia’s Renewable Energy Policy and its broader climate commitments.
With a projected investment of NAD 1.6 billion (USD 88.6 million) and an operational target of June 2026, the project is also anticipated to create over 300 direct jobs, prioritising local employment and skills development.
