Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, motorcyclists are increasingly switching over to electric vehicles as charging points are being installed in different parts of the country. Lower running costs and maintenance are other factors that motivate people to switch over to electric vehicles. The government is also promoting the use of such vehicles to bring down pollution as electric charging cuts carbon emissions, crucial in the battle against climate change.
This has led to the coming up of several enterprises connected with electric vehicles in the country. Ampersand is an e-mobility start-up that began operating in Kenya in May 2022. The start-up has seven battery-swapping stations in the capital and around 60 customers. In 2022 it sold 44 electric vehicles in Kenya as it is it’s aiming to sell 500 units this year.
However, the company officials feel that the government must make it easier to do business since there is consumer hesitancy about switching from petrol to electric, although the maintenance is low. But this awareness is yet to permeate the people.

Ecobodaa Mobility is another electrical mobility company that builds, designs, and assembles motorcycles, which can carry two batteries. The batteries can last for 160 kilometers reducing the possibility of running out of fuel before they are able to find a charging point. The company was founded in 2020 and is transiting from its pilot phase to a commercial rollout of its electric motorcycles this year.
