  • Kainerugaba was dropped from his post as commander of land forces. According to reports, the latest provocation was his flurry of tweets suggesting Uganda and Kenya drop their colonial borders and be united.

Ugandan President Museveni’s son Muhoozi Kainerugaba was appointed army commander on 24 June 2021.Later he was promoted to the rank of four-star general without much of specific duties. It was largely believed that the 78-year-old Museveni, was grooming his son as his potential successor when he retires.

It looks like Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s brazen and undiplomatic outbursts on social media has become too much to handle for Museveni. On October 4th, the Ugandan President announced his decision to replace the 48-year-old general with General Muhanga Kayanja, the brother of one of Muhoozi’s close friends who had previously commanded the Ugandan army contingents deployed in eastern DRC.

Kainerugaba was dropped from his post as commander of land forces. According to reports, the latest provocation was his flurry of tweets suggesting Uganda and Kenya drop their colonial borders and be united. In a series of tweets, he blatantly stated that his army can capture Nairobi in two weeks. He also expressed his disappointment that the former Kenyan President dis not run for the presidential polls. President Musevni, who enjoyed good relations with the new Kenyan President William Ruto apologized to Kenya for his son’s audacious tweets.

However, the general is recognised for his crucial role in restoring relations between Uganda and Rwanda this year after a nearly two-year standoff.
