The Covid-19 pandemic is providing some support to the telecom and ICT industry as indicated by data world-wide. An example is the performance of MTN Nigeria, which gained 3.9million new mobile subscribers during the nine months to the end of September. Now, MTN can boast of total subscribers of 75million in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with 200 million people.
In penetrating into the internet also, MTN Nigeria has made a mark. Adding new 5.5million users during the Covid-19 days (nine months to the end of September), it now has a subscriber strength of 30.7million. This also got reflected in the bottom lines of Africa’s largest telecom company having operations on a pan-Africa basis. The telecom company’s service revenue increased by 13.9percent and data revenue by 57percent thanks to increase in data usage and traffic.

Revenue from digital services rose by 114.3percent thanks to increased digital offerings by the company. The group’s active base of users is pegged at 1.5million. Besides, to increase the traffic, the telecom major has been partnering with digital content providers.
MTN recently announced Toriola as the chief executive designate for MTN Nigeria after current chief executive Ferdi Moolman was appointed the new group risk officer.
