MTN South Africa has launched an ambitious new pilot initiative designed to fast-track access to 5G connectivity through a same-day delivery model for SIM cards and home internet bundles. Dubbed Shesh@5G, the service utilises motorbike couriers to deliver 5 G-ready packages directly to customers’ doorsteps in select Johannesburg suburbs, within just two hours of order placement.
This innovative model marks a departure from traditional telecommunications service logistics and signals a customer-centric shift in MTN’s delivery strategy. Through the Shesh@5G platform, customers can order online and receive their 5G SIM cards or home broadband kits almost instantly. They can then complete the mandatory SIM registration process (known locally as RICA) through the MTN app, enabling immediate access to high-speed internet services.
Tania Ladopoulou, General Manager for Online and Telesales at MTN South Africa, highlighted the service’s focus on convenience and speed. He stated that MTN is removing long-standing pain points like delayed deliveries and in-store queues. This is about providing efficient, on-demand service to a digitally savvy market.”
Shesh@5G is part of MTN’s broader mission to drive digital inclusion. The pilot complements its recently announced Smartphone For All campaign, which aims to distribute over 1.2 million subsidized 4G smartphones to customers for just R99. Together, these initiatives reflect MTN’s commitment to narrowing the digital divide and expanding access to mobile broadband across underserved communities in South Africa.
Although currently limited to Johannesburg, MTN plans to scale the Shesh@5G service nationwide depending on initial performance. The company’s agile, last-mile delivery model could become a blueprint for future rollouts across the region.

This initiative also aligns with national priorities set by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), which views 5G expansion as a cornerstone of economic growth, digital equity, and the development of smart cities. If successful, Shesh@5G could redefine how telecom services are delivered, paving the way for faster, more accessible, and more inclusive connectivity across South Africa and potentially other emerging markets.
