MTN Ghana Deepens Investment in Girls-in-ICT Initiative to Champion Digital Inclusion and Female Empowerment

(3 Minutes Read)

MTN Ghana has reaffirmed its strong and unwavering dedication to promoting digital inclusion and empowering young girls through its continued investment in the National Girls-in-ICT Initiative. This bold commitment underlines the company’s broader vision of creating a digitally inclusive society where every Ghanaian child—especially girls—has access to practical digital education and opportunities.

The Girls-in-ICT programme, a flagship initiative by the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, is designed to equip young girls and their teachers with vital Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills to prepare them for future careers in the digital world. To date, the initiative has successfully trained over 13,000 girls and 1,300 teachers across 11 regions in Ghana.Participants in the programme receive hands-on training in essential digital skills such as coding, website development, animation, and game design—areas crucial for success in today’s technology-driven economy.

Speaking at the climax of the Volta Regional edition of the programme, MTN Ghana’s Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Adwoa Wiafe, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative in shaping the country’s future workforce. “At MTN, inclusivity is at the heart of what we do. We are committed to empowering girls, persons with disabilities, and all individuals who deserve a fair opportunity,” she stated. “We are not just making promises—we are taking action. Our aim is to ensure that every Ghanaian child, particularly girls, has access to practical ICT education. In today’s world, digital skills are no longer a luxury—they are a necessity.” She also referenced MTN Ghana CEO Stephen Blewett’s belief that “the next big thing must come from Africa,” adding, “We are helping make that vision a reality by equipping young people with the tools, skills, and platforms needed to innovate and succeed.”

In 2021, to mark its 25th Anniversary, MTN Ghana pledged an initial investment of GH¢10 million over three years to support the Girls-in-ICT programme. That commitment has since grown significantly to GH¢17.6 million, extending through to 2025. This makes MTN Ghana one of the most significant private sector contributors to the national digital empowerment agenda. The Volta Region engagement is part of a series of three regional events planned for 2025. The remaining editions are set to take place in the Upper East and Upper West regions, further expanding the programme’s national footprint.

In a strategic move to ensure long-term sustainability and reach, the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations is also working on establishing a Trust Fund dedicated to supporting and expanding the initiative.

MTN Ghana’s continued support aligns with its corporate vision of leading the delivery of a bold, new digital world and its core belief that everyone should benefit from a modern, connected life. The initiative also reflects MTN’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, as the company strives to close the digital divide and nurture the next generation of female digital leaders in Ghana.
