MTC Launches eSIM Service for Namibians, Ushering in a New Era of Digital Connectivity

(3 Minutes Read)

Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has officially introduced its Electronic Subscriber Identity Module (eSIM) service for local users, expanding its reach beyond the previously available option limited to outbound travelers.

The official launch took place on Friday, 19 September 2025, and was presided over by the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus. She highlighted that the adoption of eSIM technology marks a significant step toward achieving secure, seamless, and universal digital connectivity in Namibia.

“The rollout of eSIM technology will not only boost digital inclusion by making mobile services more accessible, but also act as a catalyst for innovation in sectors such as the Internet of Things (IoT), smart agriculture, digital health, e-commerce, and mobile banking,” Theofelus stated.

However, she cautioned that there are challenges to overcome, particularly in terms of device compatibility and public awareness. “Many current mobile devices do not support eSIM, which could hinder adoption—especially among lower-income groups. Additionally, the general public is still largely unaware of the technology and its benefits. I urge digital service providers to prioritize education and accessibility for all citizens,” she added.

MTC Managing Director Dr. Licky Erastus said the company remains committed to redefining the digital landscape. “Namibia is not merely keeping up with global tech trends—we are shaping them. This launch is part of our broader mission to empower customers with seamless, secure, and affordable connectivity, whether they are traveling, working remotely, or conducting business internationally,” he said. Erastus also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of ICT and the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) for their ongoing support in driving forward ICT innovation in the country.
