Mozambique’s Intra-African Trade at USD 1.5 billion

Mozambique’s exports to other African countries, over the last year, reached USD 1.5 billion. According to António Grispos, Secretary of State for Trade, at the opening of MozExport, a platform that is taking place in the central province of Tete, aimed at establishing trade agreements and opportunities for export diversification. The data indicate that trade is concentrated in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region through the Free Trade Area. The preferential markets, he said, only absorbed 49 per cent of total exports.

Mozambique is actively participating in AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area) to boost intra-Africa trade and regional economic integration. The country launched its first AfCFTA shipment in June 2025, signaling a commitment to a more connected and prosperous Africa. Mozambique’s participation in AfCFTA aims to reduce trade barriers, facilitate the free movement of goods and services, and foster strategic partnerships.

Mozambique ratified AfCFTA in January 2023, becoming the 47th country to do so. The country’s tariff offer was approved in February 2025, enabling trade with other member states under the agreement. Mozambique’s Beira port is a crucial logistical hub linking landlocked countries to global markets, highlighting the country’s potential to strengthen regional supply chains.

Mozambique’s “Industrialise Mozambique” initiative aims to boost industrial development and infrastructure, which aligns with the goals of AfCFTA. Mozambique is actively addressing infrastructure gaps, reducing bureaucratic barriers, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to maximize the benefits of AfCFTA.

Mozambique’s trade with other African nations has reached USD 7.1 billion over the past five years, demonstrating a foundation for increased trade under AfCFTA. The first AfCFTA shipment from Mozambique was sent to Kenya, marking a significant step in the country’s implementation of the agreement.  Although Mozambique signed on to AfCFTA in 2018, the country’s tariff offer was approved in February 2025 by the African Union.
