The first export shipment of heavy sands from Chibuto could be made by August this year after the completion of the dock to be used in the Chongoene district, Gaza province. The project had returned to a satisfactory pace after a stoppage last December occasioned by disagreements with affected communities.

The project had returned to a satisfactory pace after a stoppage last December occasioned by disagreements with affected communities.
A port official said that the construction of the port in Chongoene was divided into three phases. The first will be completed by next August, enabling the export by sea of heavy sands to various destinations.
Chongoene port would boost the development of the region and the country, through the creation of jobs and parallel ventures and will export six to eight million tons of Chibuto heavy sands a year.

The project to build the Chongoene port was announced in August 2022, funded by Chinese company Dingsheng Minerals, which has been mining heavy sands in Chibuto, a neighbouring district, since 2018. The mining concession to Dingsheng Minerals runs for 25 years and the company is expected to extract one million tons of ilmenite (titanium and iron oxide) annually, in addition to heavy sands. China is one of the main export destinations of other mines of the same type, owned by firms from other countries, in Mozambique.
