The production of cement for civil construction will start at the Salamanga factory in Maputo, Mozambique in coming September. Some works, such as assembly of equipment, plant construction etc are currently nearing completion at the Matutuine district plant.
It may be noted that the construction of the cement plant resumed after a gap of more than 10 years. The factory is expected to be on stream shortly since 90% of the work is complete by now. The plant has a capacity to produce up to 5,000 tons of cement per day. The country has severe shortage of cement, with the results that it is imported in large quantities.
The new plant will have a coal-fired captive power plant, which can generate 36 megawatts of electricity. The raw material to be used for the manufacture of cement will be sourced locally. The near completion plant is providing employment to 400 ozambicans and the number is expected to go up once the plant becomes fully operational. Having an investment of US$ 330 million, the commissioning of the plant will help the construction activities in the country, besides saving precious foreign exchange spent by way of importing cement.
