In April 2024, health authorities in Sofala acknowledged limitations in the control of medicine warehouses in Beira, a week after the arrest of six people, including health workers, for smuggling medicines.

The Mozambican government will introduce an electronic system to track medicines in the national health system to curb theft. According to Minister of Health Ussene Isse, the Government would not allow corruption of any kind in the handling of medicines, and those who indulge in corruption would be removed from service. The government official promised to introduce an electronic system to track medicines in the national health system, to curb the constant reports of cases of theft of drugs and other medical equipment.
