Mozambique has taken a significant step in consolidating its position as a pivotal energy corridor in southern Africa by signing memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with both Zambia and Zimbabwe. These strategic partnerships, formalised during the 11th Mining and Energy Conference held in Maputo, aim to deepen regional collaboration in energy integration, industrialisation, and sustainable development.

Speaking at the conference, Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estevão Pale, emphasised that the agreements extend beyond basic technical cooperation. He described them as a reflection of “a joint vision of interdependence and shared progress,” positioning Mozambique at the heart of southern Africa’s energy dynamics. “Mozambique thus strengthens its geostrategic position as a SADC energy corridor, contributing to regional energy security and to the balance of our trade balance through energy exports,” he stated.

MoU with Zambia: Fuel Pipeline Project to Boost Trade and Stability

The agreement with Zambia focuses on the development of a major energy infrastructure project—a gas pipeline that will run from Beira, a key port city in Mozambique, to Ndola in Zambia. The pipeline is designed to transport up to 3.5 million metric tonnes of petroleum products annually.

This initiative is expected to significantly improve Zambia’s access to a reliable and cost-effective fuel supply, reducing logistical inefficiencies and enhancing energy security. Additionally, the increased throughput at the Beira fuel terminal is anticipated to stimulate Mozambique’s economic activity and create mutual economic benefits for both countries.

MoU with Zimbabwe: Enhancing Power Cooperation and Infrastructure

In parallel, the agreement with Zimbabwe centers on strengthening bilateral cooperation in electricity-related areas, including generation, transmission, and supply. It also introduces mechanisms to support increased fuel trade and the development of energy infrastructure, critical components for Zimbabwe’s ongoing efforts to boost industrial production and economic resilience.

Both agreements highlight Mozambique’s commitment to fostering regional energy integration and underscore its role in facilitating cross-border cooperation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
