Mozambique has introduced an express train to South Africa and Eswatini, that will boost the movement of people and goods between the three countries. The announcement was made by Miguel Matabele, the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Mozambique’s publicly owned ports and rail company (CFM) at the Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM).
CFM has already signed an agreement on July 1st with South Africa’s Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) for the elimination of the rail border. Another agreement was signed on 5 August with the Eswatini Railways for direct rail links for the transport of goods. The agreement will facilitate hassle-free movement of the trains operated by CFM and the South African company TFR across the border at Ressano Garcia without the need to change rolling stock. The Maputo Corridor initially will have 21 trains per week against the current 15 trains, carrying chrome and ferrochrome to the port of Maputo. The removal of the Goba railway border will allow free circulation of goods trains between Eswatini and Mozambique. As an outcome of the agreement, the Goba railway will double the number of daily coal trains, from two to four which will increase the volume of coal transported from the current 3,600 tonnes to 7,200 tonnes per day.
