Mozambique’s fisheries exports fell by 56 per cent in 2020 as against the previous year. There was a sharp fall in the quantum of catches by the industrial and semi-industrial fleets.

Mozambique’s Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Augusta Maita, while expressing her concern on the sharp fall in catches, maintained that this trend has been continuing for the last 20 years, affecting the country’s exports, leading to trade imbalances.

Maita said that the fishing campaign for 2021 would be launched on April 1. The country was going through the recent impacts of the tropical cyclones Chalane and Eloise that hit the Mozambican coast. The cyclone damaged several fishing boats, coastal roads, installations and aquaculture production units.

The minister said that the Maritime Fishing Regulations (REPMAR) passed in 2020, were now in force and represented a landmark in the country’s efforts to implement measures intended to manage, protect and ensure sustainable use of its fishery resources. She revealed that the fisheries recorded a recovery at the third quarter of 2020, which translated into a positive performance and consequently a 1.6 per cent growth rate.
