Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation during a high-level meeting held on Thursday in Maputo. The diplomatic engagement came on the heels of the 50th anniversary of Mozambique’s independence, a milestone celebrated the previous day.
During the joint appearance, President Chapo emphasised the deep-rooted ties between Mozambique and Portugal, describing their relationship as one of historical friendship, fraternity, and shared language. He expressed gratitude for hosting the Portuguese head of state during such a significant moment for Mozambique.
“We have historic relations of friendship and cooperation, of fraternity, as well as ties of language between Mozambique and Portugal. For us, it is a privilege, a great honour, to receive the Portuguese President, and particularly at a special moment, which is the 50th anniversary of Mozambique’s independence,” Chapo stated.
He noted that the meeting provided both countries with the opportunity to assess their existing partnership and explore new avenues for collaboration. A central theme of the discussions was mutual support in advancing economic growth and improving the quality of life for citizens.
“Our focus is on Mozambique’s economic growth and development. Countries are like people—no one grows or develops alone. We made a very positive assessment of our relations of friendship and cooperation,” Chapo said.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa echoed these sentiments, highlighting that both nations are navigating a new historical phase marked by generational shifts and contemporary challenges. He stressed the importance of addressing these issues collaboratively, affirming that a fresh chapter in Mozambique–Portugal relations is already underway.
“Both Portugal and Mozambique are experiencing a new historical cycle, shaped by a generational transition and emerging challenges that demand shared solutions. This new chapter is being written through our joint efforts,” de Sousa said.
