On Friday, Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo officially opened the 65th Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo, emphasizing the enduring political, economic, and cultural bonds between Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Chapo described the two nations as “sister countries” with a shared history and future, stating, “Mozambique is Zimbabwe, and Zimbabwe is Mozambique.”

The event coincided with Zimbabwe’s 45th independence anniversary and Mozambique’s upcoming 50th, symbolising their historic solidarity. Chapo noted the significance of this milestone year, highlighting that Mozambique will also host the 60th Maputo International Trade Fair in August.

Calling for unity to drive industrialisation and economic growth, Chapo stressed the need for joint efforts to unlock the potential of both countries. He pointed to natural resource wealth—such as Zimbabwe’s lithium, gold, and arable land, and Mozambique’s gas, minerals, and cultivable land—as a foundation for building sustainable economies.

Chapo also affirmed continued cooperation on regional infrastructure projects, particularly the Beira Corridor, a vital trade link between the two countries. He invited attendees to participate in Mozambique’s trade fair and reiterated support for regional integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Reflecting on their liberation struggle, Chapo praised the strong historical ties and thanked Zimbabwe for its hospitality. He affirmed Mozambique’s commitment to strengthening investment and trade relations with Zimbabwe and the broader SADC region.

ZITF Board Chair Busisa Moyo revealed a 12% increase in exhibitors this year, with foreign participation up by 91%. Chapo commended the fair’s role in advancing economic resilience and competitiveness, noting Mozambique’s presence aimed to gather insights to support private sector growth and sustainable development.

Concluding his address, President Chapo highlighted the importance of empowering youth and future generations through sustained cooperation and economic progress.
