Tanzania will soon benefit from Oman’s rich experience in airport management and VIP services. The Oman Airports has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kilimanjaro Airports Development Company (KADCO) for upgrading of Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA). The agreement was signed at the Oman-Tanzania Business Forum held in Muscat on June 13th, on the side-lines of the visit of the Tanzanian President to Oman.
According to the agreement, Oman Airports will undertake the development of VIP lounge, hangar facility at KIA, a five-star hotel for passengers, a business complex and shopping mall at the airport.
Kilimanjaro apart from being a global tourist attraction, also enjoys proximity to numerous tourism attractions in the northern circuit, The airport functions as a hub also connect flights from KIA to and from Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA), Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar and airports in neighbouring countries.
The MoU signed by the Vice-President for Business Development of Oman Airports, Mr Abdul Nasser Abdullah al Yamani and Acting Managing Director of KADCO, Ms Christine Mwakatobe has also the potential to expand the scope of cooperation.
The business forum witnessed signing of about eight MOUs between the governments as well as private sector of both the countries.
The agreements cover sectors like energy, tourism, natural resources, higher education, training and national museums.
Oman’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Sayyid Badr Hamad al Busaidi, disclosed that an agreement was signed to establish an investment fund between Oman and Tanzania primarily in projects, including agriculture, fishing and mining.
