Madagascar is building the country’s first motorway, which connects the capital, Antananarivo, to Tamatave, the economic hub, and largest port. The project is being implemented by the Egyptian company Samcrete. This will be completed in four years, entailing a cost of nearly US$1 billion.

The highway is expected to relieve the congestion of the national highway. It is estimated that the traffic will be multiplied by five times in the next three years. The project has been a source of igniting differences of opinion between the authorities and certain segments of the population, particularly farmers since they would be adversely affected since the motorway will pass through their fields.

But, by and large, the general population welcomes the project since it would considerably benefit them economically and also in decongesting the traffic, which can lead to the speedy movement of people and cargo to and from the port. Experts also point out that the motorway has advantages from an environmental angle and is expected to bring down the carbon emission considerably. The highway that will link the capital to the main port, will cut down an 11-hour journey to a 2.5-hour. The first stage of the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023.
