Morocco aims to produce one million tons of green ammonia by 2027 and three million tons by 2032, reducing its reliance on imported grey fertilizers. The country’s green hydrogen goals received a major boost with a €30 million non-refundable grant from German-based KGAL Investment Management and KfW, supporting a new green ammonia project in Jorf-El Jadida.
This funding, provided through the PtX Development Fund, will back Hydrojeel’s Jorf Hydrogen Platform project, which aims to generate 100,000 tons of green ammonia annually by the end of 2026. Developed on behalf of OCP Group, this initiative was chosen from 98 proposals submitted from seven countries.
Thomas Engelmann, Managing Director of the PtX Development Fund and Head of Energy Transition at KGAL, stated that Hydrojeel will employ advanced techniques, significantly minimizing risks from development to offtake. The project will be situated in the Jorf Industrial Park at the Jorf-El Jadida port. It will harness wind and solar energy from new facilities to create green hydrogen, which will then be converted into ammonia for fertilizer. OCP Group plans to utilize the entire production for domestic green fertilizer manufacturing.

This initiative is part of OCP Group’s larger plan to achieve one million tons of green ammonia by 2027 and three million by 2032, aiming to lessen Morocco’s dependence on imported grey fertilizers. The BMZ-funded PtX Development Fund, with a budget of €270 million, supports KfW’s PtX Platform to promote hydrogen projects in the Global South. The first funding round provided €60 million in grants, with a second round open until March 5. The overall project seeks to produce one million metric tons of green ammonia annually, leveraging Morocco’s solar and wind resources to benefit sectors such as agriculture, transportation, and energy storage.
