Morocco’s demand for natural gas is expected to hit 3 billion cubic meters as the country seeks to decarbonize its economy. To brace up to meet the increasing demand and access the LNG market in April, Morocco will use the existing infrastructure in the country and in Europe, energy minister Leila Benali said. Morocco is preparing four ports to receive LNG and is also building transport and storage facilities, she added.

Natural gas is considered as the pillar of Morocco’s energy strategy. The minister had revealed earlier that Morocco was discussing with Spain to use its LNG terminals and regasification units to import gas through the Maghreb-Europe pipeline, which has become fully owned by Morocco since Oct last year. The LNG market is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Minister disclosed that Morocco will be able to exceed 52% of installed capacity of renewable energy by 2025. The country also has launched projects to add 10 GW of wind, solar and hydro capacity in the next few years.
