Morocco will be leading the United Nations Human Rights Council after beating off a challenge from South Africa. It was voted to lead Africa in a recent vote that took place in Geneva.
Morocco’s Ambassador Omar Zniber was elected council president after polling 30 votes, while South African opponent, Mxolisi Nkosi, managed just 17 votes. The ballot came after Africa failed to name a consensus candidate.

Going by the reports, some accusations and counters during the elections. South Africa criticized Morocco’s human rights record. It said that it was least eligible for the post on account of its human rights track record and Rabat’s illegal occupation of Western Sahara. Rabat’s candidacy was also opposed by its neighbor Algeria. The UN Human Rights Council was established in 2006 with a mandate to protect and promote human rights around the world.
