Morocco is nearing completion of a strategically important second border crossing with Mauritania at Amgala. The crossing extends past Guerguerat into the buffer zone, significantly undermining Polisario’s diminishing territorial claims.
The construction of this new crossing is over 95% finished. This additional land route significantly changes regional politics and trade across the Sahara. The 93-kilometer road connecting Smara to the Mauritanian border via Amgala and Tifariti has been developed for MAD 49.7 million (around USD 5 million). Regional Director Samih Zemmari notes that the project includes four road sections, with the last 53-kilometre segment of National Road 17 nearing 88% completion at MAD 28.23 million.
