Morocco: OCP Green Water Increases Desalination Capacity in Casablanca

(3 Minutes Read)

OCP Green Water has made a major advancement in securing water resources for Casablanca South by delivering 60 million cubic meters of desalinated water annually. This initiative, which began in October 2024, aims to meet increasing water demands and enhance supply stability in the region.

Developed in partnership with OCP Manufacturing, JESA, various national and international industrial collaborators, and public authorities, the project tackles water scarcity in the Oum Rabii basin. It underscores OCP Group’s dedication to sustainable solutions amid growing pressures on water supplies. Casablanca South is now served by a dedicated desalination unit at OCP’s Jorf Lasfar facility.

Initially, the plant provided 20 million cubic meters per year in October 2024, ramping up to 60 million cubic meters by the end of December. This development now satisfies over a quarter of the city’s drinking water needs. The project employs advanced technology, including a desalination plant operated by OCP Green Water, a pumping station, and a 54.5-kilometer pipeline constructed by public authorities, connecting the facility to the Daourate dam station, which is crucial for Casablanca South’s water supply.

In its efforts to optimise resources and reduce environmental impact, the project incorporates an innovative seawater recycling process. Integrated into Jorf Lasfar’s industrial operations, this system recycles desalinated seawater to minimise waste and enhance efficiency. This initiative plays a vital role in bolstering water security by increasing the availability of potable water for a growing urban population and ensuring a reliable water supply. It also alleviates pressure on natural resources, as the advanced desalination technology helps preserve existing freshwater reserves and promotes alternative water solutions. By diversifying water sources, the project enhances resilience against climate-related challenges, mitigating risks from drought and extreme weather.

OCP Green Water is spearheading national efforts to develop non-conventional water sources, concentrating on seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. Over the next few years, Khouribga, Youssoufia, Benguerir, and Marrakech will benefit from similar initiatives. By the end of 2024, OCP Green Water’s desalination capacity at Jorf Lasfar and Safi is expected to reach 185 million cubic meters. The group aims to increase this capacity to 280 million cubic meters in 2025 and 560 million cubic meters by 2027, alongside a wastewater treatment capacity of 50 million cubic meters. Collaborating with OCP Group, the government, and industrial partners, OCP Green Water is committed to expanding access to sustainable water resources while embedding innovation and environmental stewardship into its long-term strategy.
