The proposed Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project agreed between the two countries in late 2016 during a visit by King Mohammed VI to Abuja is expected to promote African integration, regional trade, and economic cooperation. In December 2020, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) endorsed the Moroccan-Nigerian off-shore on-shore gas pipeline that will benefit 16 African countries.
The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) has agreed to fund 50 pc of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) Study for the project.The funding agreement was signed remotely on 20th December by IsDB Vice President Mansur Muhtar, Moroccan Economy & Finance minister Nadia Fettah, and Director General of the National Office of Hydrocarbons & Mines (ONHYM) Amina Benkhadra.
The cost of the project’s studies estimated at $90 million will be shared equally by Morocco and Nigeria. The Moroccan contribution will be supported by IsDB in the financing of the project with $15.4 million under the “Service Ijara” operation. For the Nigerian contribution, the IsDB Bank’s support will be $29.7 million in the FEED study.
The objective of the study is to help take the final investment decision by 2023 for the infrastructure project. It will also help to carry out the environment & social impact study and also finance land acquisition studies for agreeing with all countries to be crossed by the pipeline to ensure smooth implementation of the works at a later stage.
