National institute of agronomy of Morocco and Volcani center of agricultural research of Israel have signed an agreement to enhance cooperation, share experiences and know-how in farming and agricultural research. The agreement was signed during the 1st international conference held in Israel on 18-20 October on food production technologies from the sea & the desert.
Director of Moroccan agronomy institute Faouzi Bekkaoui, who signed the agreement on Behalf of Morocco said that both countries have started working on deepening the partnership. He disclosed that several projects are under review. Many of them fall under the USAID’s sponsored Middle East Regional Cooperation Program (MERC) supporting projects between Arab countries and Israel. Water scarcity management in agriculture and genetic improvement of tomatoes was cited as one example.
The primary objective of the agreement is to learn from the experience of Volcani in smart & green agriculture and wheat genetic improvement. The Programme will also cover exchanges of students and researchers.
Another recent case of Partnership between Morocco and Israel is the collaboration between Mehadrin, Israel’s largest grower and exporter of citrus fruits and vegetables, with a Moroccan agribusiness to produce and export avocados. The joint venture is expected to produce annually 10,000 tons of avocado mostly targeted to the European market.
Cooperation between the two countries commenced after the normalization of relations between them in 2020. Over the past two years, cooperation between the two countries have started gaining momentum in all sectors, through exchange of high-level visits and talks.
