The Pan African pipeline, the strategic project initiated by King Mohammed VI of Morocco and President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has been hailed as a golden opportunity for Europe to diversify its gas supplies in the event of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Amina Benkhadra, the general manager of Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Minerals (ONHYM), has revealed that Morocco has initiated talks with European partners to guarantee the financing of the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline.
The multi-billion Nigeria-Morocco pipeline aims to provide energy services across over 11 African countries while reaching out to Europe. The joint project is viewed as a potential catalyst for regional economic development. The pipeline is expected to contribute to the energy security of not only Nigeria and Morocco but also serve several countries in Africa and Europe, particularly after Algeria’s decision to end the contract of the Europe-Maghreb gas pipeline in October last year. The estimated cost of the project is around $25 billion and will run 1,672 kilometers through Morocco.
