For the 2024/2025 season, Morocco has imported nearly 2 million tonnes of soft wheat from the European Union, solidifying its role as the second-largest importer, trailing only Nigeria. The Kingdom’s agrifood sector has demonstrated strong performance, with imports totaling 1,995,567 tonnes, a decrease from the previous year’s 3,583,330 tonnes. This places Morocco behind Nigeria, which imported 2,249,915 tonnes, and ahead of Algeria, at 1,346,451 tonnes.
Additionally, Morocco ranks second in barley imports from the EU, having brought in 582,323 tonnes by the end of March, down from 921,104 tonnes last season. Saudi Arabia leads in this category with 953,886 tonnes, significantly up from 155,884 tonnes the previous year.
The broader global dynamics are reflected in the European Union’s total exports of 15,683,775 tonnes of soft wheat and 3,763,138 tonnes of barley for the current season. Simultaneously, the EU has imported 6,313,863 tonnes of soft wheat and 931,214 tonnes of barley.
In terms of soft wheat suppliers to the EU, Ukraine has emerged as the dominant exporter with 4,096,794 tonnes, followed by Canada and Moldova with 896,825 tonnes and 475,821 tonnes, respectively. Ukraine also leads in barley imports, supplying 396,624 tonnes, followed by the UK and Moldova.

Notably, Morocco has regained its position among the main suppliers of durum wheat semolina to the EU, exporting 914 tonnes, an increase from 709 tonnes last season. The total EU imports of semolina from July 2024 to March 2025 reached 3,047 tonnes, with Turkey and Egypt following as the second and third largest suppliers, providing 391 tonnes and 338 tonnes, respectively.
