Morocco has gained admission into the IFOAM – organics international (OI) standards according to a recent announcement by Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture. The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) is the worldwide umbrella organization for the organic agriculture movement. The Ministry added that the admission was granted after the national organic standards of Morocco’s “Bio-Maroc” underwent a rigorous evaluation process in respect of the Common Objectives and Requirements of Organic Standards (COROS). The certification that gives international credibility is expected to give a big boost to Morocco’s organic product exports particularly in international markets such as Saudi Arabia, Australia etc where there is a rising demand for organic products.
Since 2021, Organic farming in Morocco has been on the rise. In 2010, only 4000 hectares of land was used for organic farming. In 2019, it went up to 12000 hectares claiming bigger share in exports. Experts are of the view that the political will to encourage organic farming attracted many small farmers into the sector.
