Morocco is making steady strides in establishing itself as a regional leader in renewable energy and strategic minerals, Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali announced Tuesday during the fourth Europe-Africa Forum in Marseille, according to Morocco’s official Press Agency (MAP).
Speaking during a high-level session themed “Let’s Innovate Together,” Benali emphasised that Morocco’s sustained investment in energy infrastructure over the past two decades has enabled it to emerge as a competitive and reliable producer of renewable electricity. She noted that Morocco now produces clean energy at costs up to three times lower than those of nuclear power in some European nations.
The forum, held under the joint patronage of King Mohammed VI of Morocco and French President Emmanuel Macron, brought together government officials, business leaders, and experts to bolster partnerships between Europe and Africa. It served as a platform for discussing collaborative projects focused on inclusive, sustainable development across both continents.
Benali detailed Morocco’s strategic alignment with royal directives that position energy transition as central to national sovereignty and economic resilience. She underlined the country’s commitment to expanding renewable energy, fostering local technology development, and creating industrial jobs. “Energy sovereignty is no longer a luxury—it is a matter of national security and global competitiveness,” she stated.
A particular focus of Benali’s remarks was Morocco’s emerging capacity in green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as methanol and thermal ammonia. These clean alternatives have the potential to supply global maritime fleets with more sustainable fuels at lower costs compared to liquefied natural gas (LNG), she explained. This positions Morocco to play a key role in the decarbonization of international shipping and logistics.
