The Agriculture Ministry of Morocco has announced the adoption of 61 Conventions to Save Oasis Agriculture from Climate Change as part of its national strategy to develop a resilient agriculture ecosystem. The agreements are designed to support projects and local initiatives to promote oasis agriculture and mitigate the effects of climate change. Climate change has been posing major challenges for Morocco’s oasis ecosystem. The country has adopted a new Generation Green strategy that aims to set up resilient and eco-efficient agriculture, improve living conditions in rural areas, and create jobs.
The agreements were signed in the presence of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests Minister Mohammed Sadiki chaired t in Errachidia. The initiative has a budget of MAD 23.6 million ($2.2 million) and aims to fund sustainability projects related to boosting agricultural activities in oases. According to a statement issued by the Ministry, the funding for the projects will be approved based on employability, environmental impact, and contribution to women and rural youth empowerment. It aims to promote climate change agricultural activities on a perimeter of 5000 ha in the oases downstream from the Kaddoussa dam and is part of the Program for the Development of Irrigation and Adaptation of Agriculture to Climate Change (PDIAA-CC). The programme is co-financed by the French Development Agency (AFD), the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Moroccan government.
The Minister stated that the approved 61 projects will be carried out by 30 agricultural cooperatives, 18 associations, seven service cooperatives, three foundations, two associations of agricultural water users (AUEA), and an economic interest grouping (EIG).
