Several hundred people representing Morocco’s left-wing trade union movement – Confédération Démocratique du Travail (CDT)- denounced the “high cost of living” and “government inaction” in Casablanca. There is a ban on such demonstrations. Demonstrators gathered in the historic center of the economic capital, chanting extreme difficulties being faced by the poor people.
Initially, the CDT wanted to organize a national march in Casablanca, despite the parade being banned by local authorities. The rally took place without major incidents. Morocco is faced with soaring prices, particularly for food products, which are affecting the most modest households. Inflation got tamed in April, to 7.8% year-on-year as against 10.1% in February and 8.2% in March. However, the rise in food prices remains very high (+16.3% year-on-year).

The country faced a chronic deficit in rainfall. This has affected mostly the agricultural sector. Because of that, prices of fruits and vegetables increased phenomenally. The CDT denounced the government’s inaction in implementing the social agreement signed last year. It may be recalled that in April 2022, the executive signed a social agreement with the main trade unions and employers, which included an increase in the minimum wage in both the private and public sectors. The government authorities maintain that a large part of its commitments was fulfilled despite the difficult economic climate.
