Moroccan diplomat Fathallah Sijilmassi is appointed as the first Director-General of the African Union Commission after a rigorous selection process. The mandate of the post includes the coordination between various bodies of the AUC and AU member States to ensure better performance of the African Union Commission.
Sijilmassi had held several important positions including Secretary-General of the Union for the Mediterranean, and as Morocco’s Ambassador to France (2004-2009) and the European Union (2003-2004). He also served as the Head of the Moroccan Investment Development Agency and played a key role in Morocco’s FTA talks with the EU, the U.S. and with several Arab and African countries. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics.
