The UK government has announced that it proposes to open up its market for more trade and investment with Malawi. The announcement came from British High Commissioner to Lilongwe, David Beer while delivering his keynote address at the Malawi-UK Business Group high-level virtual networking event on 23rd July. More than 200 participants attended the event highlighting the opportunities in Malawi’s Agro-Business sector.
Mr Beer stated that UK was keen to support Malawi’s Agro-business sector to make it more competitive in the region and get more Malawian agro-products into the UK market. He added that the UK would like to support developing countries like Malawi to access the UK agro-business market as a way to boost the sector. He also appreciated Malawi’s commitment in fighting corruption and its constant efforts in cutting out the red-tape and eliminate bureaucratic interferences in the Agro-business industry making it easy for trade and investment.
Speaking at the seminar, Trade and Industry Minister, Sosten Gwengwe said that Malawi Government has created a conducive environment and favourable conditions for the Agro-business to attract direct investment. Gwengwe urged the UK Diaspora Malawians to actively support the Agro-business development program promoted by the Malawi and UK governments through the Malawi-UK business Group. There is a realisation that Malawi has to move away from its dependence on tobacco and diversify and build up its agro- business sector. It has several other crops including coffee, cotton, medicinal and industrial cannabis, macadamia, beans, rice, soya, maize, groundnuts, and many others.
