With the increase in terrorist attacks, operations were suspended in many mines. As a result, between 2,000 and 3,000 direct jobs have been lost entailing a loss of thousands of dollars of revenues collected by the authorities

With the increase in terrorist attacks, operations were suspended in many mines. Burkina Faso has been experiencing a mining boom since the early 2000s, mainly in the gold and zinc, and manganese sectors. Today, the country is Africa’s fifth-largest gold producer.  PlanetGOLD project sites are in Burkina Faso. Artisanal and small-scale mining is the primary source of income for a large part of the country’s population, with over 430,000 people directly employed at more than 440 mine sites.

Apart from the growing attacks from terrorists, mining is a dangerous profession. The traditional occupational hazards such as coal dust inhalation, damage to hearing due to the noise in a mine, and chemical hazards still stand. Apart from that, the challenges being faced by the mining sector in the country are access to energy, capital, volatility of prices, and damage to the environment.
