Messebo Cement, operating in Ethiopia’s Tigray region has resumed production after it had suspended operations for four months due to fighting and consequent disturbances in the area. Melaku Alebel, Ethiopia’s Minister of Trade, announcing the launch of the cement plant said that the cement production would stabilize the supply and demand for the most critical inputs (raw material) in the construction sector.
Cement prices had gone up in the recent months due to supply constraints. Following strict measures the Ministry of Trade took, the price of cement per quintal was stabilized at 420 birr from 600 birr in Addis Ababa and elsewhere. Now the efforts are underway to further bridge the gap between demand and supply of cement.
Messebo Cement Factory Private Limited Company (MCF PLC) is one of EFFORT (Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigrai) groupb companies, which has a paid up capital of the company is ETB 240 million. Located in Mekele town in the Regional State of Tigrai, 780 km from Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia, the first cement line of the factory was constructed and erected by ENKA, a company based in Turkey.
The machineries of the plant are designed and supplied by world renowned cement technology supplier FLSmidth of Denmark. The investment capital of the first line is around ETB 1.3 billion and the second line is about ETB 2.2 billion. The company is now producing Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Portland Pozolana Cement (PPC), Portland Limestone Cement (PLC) and Low Heat high Sulfate Resistance Cement (LHHS). The factory’s production capacity is 7,000 tons per day and 2,100,000 tons of cement annually,
