Mauritius’s EDB signs MOUs with South African Chambers

·        The Economic Development Board (EDB) of Mauritius has signed two Memoranda of Understanding with the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber and the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 11 November
2020 and on 26 January 2021 respectively

·        In 2019, Mauritius imported  goods worth MUR 16 billion of various commodities from South Africa, while Mauritius exports to South Africa, mainly garment and apparel. In 2019, Mauritius exports  aggregated to MUR 7 billion

The Economic Development Board (EDB) of Mauritius has signed two Memoranda of Understanding with the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber and the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry on 11 November 2020 and on 26 January 2021 respectively. The signing ceremony was conducted through a virtual platform.

The 156  -year old  Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, based in Port Elizabeth, has been an iconic business association having an expanding list of members, while the  Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry was established in 1804 and is the oldest  business association of South Africa. The objective of two MOUs was to facilitate the Island nation’s trade with South Africa.

Mauritius and South Africa  have strong and long  trading ties.  South Africa is  Mauritius’ most important trading partner on the African continent.  In 2019, Mauritius imported  goods worth MUR 16 billion of various commodities from South Africa, while Mauritius exports to South Africa, mainly garment and apparel. In 2019, Mauritius exports  aggregated to MUR 7 billion. South Africa is the  third  most important sourcing destination and the  third most important export market for Mauritius.

Both countries also have strong investment ties. Approximately MUR 4.3 billion investment flown into Mauritius in 2019   originated from South Africa.  South Africa second most important source of FDI for Mauritius on a global scale and first source of FDI in Africa.

Concurrently, the EDB – South Africa Office intends to formalize more partnerships between the Economic Development Board and other South African provincial Chambers of Commerce.
