Mauritius: Tourist Arrivals Up 3.3% in 2025; Minister Highlights Growth, Warns Against Complacency

(3 Minutes Read)

From January to July 2025, tourist arrivals to Mauritius increased by 3.3% (+25,342), with a notable 10.2% rise in July alone. Tourism Minister Delegate Sydney Pierre attributes the growth partly to a shift in travel patterns, with delayed visits from early 2025 pushing arrivals into later months. He cautions against overinterpreting percentage changes without deeper analysis.

Key markets showed mixed trends: India (+31.5%), Italy (+19.2%), and South Africa (+7.3%) performed strongly, while France (-1.8%) and Germany (-11.1%) declined over the period—though both rebounded in July. Secondary markets like the Czech Republic (+27%) and Spain (+16.6%) also contributed to growth.

Pierre underscores the critical role of direct air connectivity in driving demand, citing expanded flight routes from countries like China and Italy. He notes that tourism revenues rose 6.8% to Rs 53.8 billion for Jan–July 2025, with June revenues alone up nearly 26% year-on-year.

Looking ahead, the Minister stresses the need for reforms to sustain momentum, including tracking global tourism trends, maintaining a balance between airline capacity and hotel occupancy, and enhancing the customer experience. A long-term tourism blueprint is currently being drafted to guide future strategy.
