Mauritius’ Prime Minister assured parliament that his government is making an independent review of an agreement with the United Kingdom on the Chagos Islands. In an earlier deal with the previous government, both Mauritius and Britain agreed to return control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius in return for Diego Gracia, which houses a major base for US and UK troops.

The deal, which paves the way for the potential return of people who were forcibly removed from the islands has been criticized by the UK opposition.
