The Government of Mauritius is on an overdrive to promote tourism, which has almost come to  a grinding halt on account of the pandemic. The island nation is evolving a strategy for global branding of its tourism to regain its status as the prime tourist destination. It is natural that a country whose revenue flow is significantly contributed by tourism, cannot afford to leave the sector to regain its prime position on its own.

The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority  signed  a three-year partnership deal with Liverpool Football Club (LFC) as the club’s official tourism and economic development partner in September this year.  LFC opened an International Academy on the island in   July 2019.

LFC, the winner of the coveted European Cup in 2019 is one the most avidly watched football teams globally, garnering a television audience of 871 million people annually.   It has a digital footprint of more than 100 million connections across its respective digital platforms. Also, the Premier League is the most-watched sports league in the world with coverage in 212 territories to 643 million homes and a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people. By piggy riding with LFC, the island country feels it  can engage in promoting its brand globally and that among a wide number of football lovers across the world.
