Mauritius suspended all commercial passenger flights from South Africa from Nov. 28 due to the new coronavirus variant Omicron. Any passengers who have been physically present in South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, Eswatini and Zimbabwe will be denied entry or transit through Mauritius, a statement issued by the Government of Mauritius said. .
South African Airways, which restarted operations in September, stopped its flights to Mauritius as a result of the suspension.
Mauritius largely relies on tourism. It had 20,913 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 240 deaths reported since the pandemic began. The country had taken measures to re-start the tourism sector much earlier and the sector was picking up. One has to see how the new travel ban imposed on various countries, particularly in Africa, would affect changes in the flow of tourist traffic into the tiny island nation.
