Mauritius Health Minister Kailesh Jagutpal stated that his country
has won the battle against coronavirus but that the war against the
virus is very much active. Mauritius has become the second country in
Africa to record full recoveries after Mauritania
There were 322 active cases and all of them had recovered from the
infection. Only 10 people died of the virus. Ten had died from the
virus. The country did not record any case in the last 17 days.
The government had taken extreme measures, including complete
confinement, the closure of supermarkets and borders. Being the first
country to impose lockdown, which is still under lockdown to ward off
any spread, Mauritius insisted on social distancing, using masks and
confinements of the active and suspected cases.
Experts say that a very gradual return to normalcy is expected to
start on May 15. A few essential stores will be allowed to reopen
and markets and schools will also remain closed. There are stiff
restrictions on social get-togethers like marriages, funerals etc. The
parliament has empowered Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth to
act timely in the interest of the nation during the Covid-19 days. The
legislature is presently discussing a Quarantine Bill, which is
seeking to change the existing Act that dates back to 1954, to
empower the Director General of Health Services, police and other
frontline workers in the event of an epidemic.
