Mauritius and India forge tie-ups in construction of affordable housing sector

· They launched work on a solar power plant and a civil service college to be built with Indian aid of more than US$500 million in the Island nation, where there is a large number of Indian Diaspora living

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and his Mauritius counterpart Pravind Jugnauth recently inaugurated a US$45-million social housing project with 956 units and launched work on a solar power plant and a civil service college to be built with Indian aid of more than US$500 million in the Island nation, where there is a large number of Indian Diaspora living. The Indian aid will be in the form of line credit.

At a virtual event attended by the prime ministers, the two countries also concluded agreements for India to provide about US$200 million as assistance for a metro rail and other infrastructure projects in Mauritius. The Indian assistance will be forthcoming for high impact development projects in education, healthcare and disaster risk reduction.

Prime Minister Modi said in his opening remarks that Mauritius was a prime example of India’s approach to development partnership which was based on the needs and priorities of the partners and respects their sovereignty. Jugnauth said one of the major stations on the metro rail system to be introduced in Mauritius will be named after Mahatma Gandhi to express the gratitude of Mauritius to India. Jugnauth invited Modi to visit the country in November or December for the inauguration of the full metro service.

The 956 social housing units located at two sites were built with an Indian grant of US$20 million and a line of credit of US$25 million.
