In an unexpected turn of events, Mauritius Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Yogida Sawmynaden, stepped down. Earlier on the day, he was summoned to the Central Criminal Investigation Department (CCID) for questioning, following a complaint by Shakuntala (Simla) Kistnen — the surviving widow of Soopramanien Kistnen.
The activist of the ruling party the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) and affectionately called by many as Kaya- Soopramanien Kistnen was found dead in a sugar cane field last year. There are many stories making round as to the reasons for the murder of the activist minister. Mrs Kistnen accused Sawmynaden for making a “false statement” to the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) that she – Shakuntala (Simla) Kistnen-was employed as a “Constituency Clerk” and in that capacity she has been earning a monthly salary of approximately Euro 170.
Before submitting his resignation, Yogida Sawmynaden had a meeting with Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth. He said that he was resigning to take time to counter all fabricated allegations against him in the court of law. He also said that the Prime Minister was fully appreciative of his stand and assured his supporters and well wishers that he would come back into politics much stronger. The ex-minister was in the spotlight for some time.
Yogida Sawmynaden as Minister of Communication and Innovation has vowed to make the Island nation an ICT hub to transform the Mauritian economy and to promote Innovation. Of late, analysts say a different type of politics is being played out in the Island nation. Many scandals have surfaced in recent days regarding corruption and high handedness among the politicians.
