Mali’s draft constitution has elicited diverse views. The draft, analysts say, has given sweeping powers to the president. The new constitution, which is presently in the draft format, will replace the constitution drawn up in 1992.
However, the draft has created mixed responses among the citizens. A section of the people believes that provisions would make it possible to consolidate democracy, the rule of law, and even to a certain extent, peace. They continue to say that there are some very, very encouraging provisions that should be applauded even though those provisions did exist in the past.
Constitutional reforms were launched by the military after it ousted Mali’s elected government in August 2020. However, it did not go well with the political parties. They questioned the need for a new constitution. They termed the draft an excuse by the army to delay a return to civilian rule. They also say that the clause regarding the revision of the constitution is a paradox. They question what purpose it would serve if all provisions of the constitution are subjected to revision, arguing that the constitution is meant to provide stability and uphold rule of law.

On a positive note, a section of the people welcomed the provisions for promoting local languages to official status. This, they feel, further reduces ties to former colonial ruler France.
